Book Publication — Sentinels: Iron Portals of Chicagoland
Published by the Architecture and Design Open Archive, “Sentinels: Iron Portals of Chicagoland” is the first book in a series that re-presents and extends research produced through the Garofalo Fellowship.
During his time as the 2023–24 Garofalo Fellow at UIC, Cédric Van Parys became fascinated by billboard structures—not as modes of communication, but as standardized yet singular, even dignified, units of urban infrastructure. Sentinels pairs photographs of the backs of billboards with advertising sales copy to consider how these structures relate to the city and produce meaning, particularly through their latent monumental qualities. The book includes a conversation between Van Parys and Professor Paul Preissner (@distantbuffalo), along with an essay by curator Sevie Tsampalla (@sevie.t).
At the launch, held on October 22, 2025, graphic designer Lu Liang (@ludemarroni) discussed the development of the series’ graphic concept.

Location: KBK, Ieperlaan / Bd d’Ypres 20 , 1000, Brussels

"Stone, Steel & Sky"
I share with you some overview shots of "Stone, Steel & Sky", presented at the National Palace of Culture.
This solo exhibition brings together works created over the past several years, tracing the evolution of my artistic practice—from microhistorical readings of place to speculative inquiries into infrastructure as both symbol and memory.
Many thanks to @nikolay_anastasov_anastasov, who organised and managed the project. And to @viktoriadraganova_ with amazing curatorial support, writing, and translations.

"Stone, Steel & Sky"
Looking forward to this one!
Belgian artist Cédric Van Parys arrives in Sofia for his first solo exhibition in Bulgaria, titled "Stone, Steel & Sky." From September 18 to October 5, 2025, he will take over the iconic Marble Hall of the National Palace of Culture (NDK), transforming it into a stage where infrastructure, nature, and ritual meet.
“Stone, Steel, and Sky” references Van Parys’ interest in tectonics, gravity, weight, and matter, while also alluding to infrastructure as spaces of promise. Van Parys is hijacking or appropriating existing forms and symbols; reshuffling and juxtaposing elements and materials from the urban and rural landscape in ways that trigger the imagination, merging a critical post-capitalist message with a poetic sacredness. Naturally, his work resonates with the monumental spirit of the National Palace of Culture—built in 1981 as a national symbol of cultural ambition—now caught between past ideology and the search for new meaning.
You are very welcome to join the opening on September 18, 2025, at 18:00 in the Marble Hall of the NDK.
