Border crossings and border areas are often marked with flags, usually displaying a nationalist symbol to indicate that you are crossing a line and entering another system of beliefs and values. In contrast, the white flag—though still a strong symbol—represents neutrality and has long been used as a sign of ceasefire or temporary peace.

By shifting the context to an interior one, this symbol creates a meditative space to wander through, subtly interwoven with a strong anti-nationalist message. It’s a site-specific installation that welcomes you to the land, not to a country or a specific place, but to the land itself.

This work resonates not only with the immediate surroundings of the National Palace of Culture and with the flagpoles rising nearby but also with the artistic practice of Cédric Van Parys, whose primary line of inquiry moves through archetypes, infrastructural objects, and public monuments—structures charged with cultural, political, and symbolic meanings.
